Costa Rica Travel Tips: What You Should Know Before You Go

Costa Rica is a wonderful vacation spot – the name means 'rich coast' and is a very apt description.  Costa Rica features an amazing array of wildlife, and some stunning beaches which draw visitors from around the world.

Costa Rica’s reputation as a prime tourist site can be deceiving to visitors who are merely looking for beautiful beaches and tropical wildlife.  There are so many more things to know about this country, and knowing Costa Rica travel tips before your Costa Rica trip can help to make your vacation expectations more realistic and a lot more enjoyable as well.

Vacation in Style

Costa Rica is famous for its laid back atmosphere.  Everyone, both residents and tourists, finds themselves slowing down, taking in the scenery, and watching the wildlife.  People in Costa Rica do not tend to get stressed out about the little things like weather conditions, they just relax and enjoy the atmosphere around them.

The people of Costa Rica are generally very friendly.  As in most countries, the native people appreciate any attempt on your part to speak their language.  An important Costa Rica travel tip is to use the Spanish you know in order to communicate.

Staying Safe in Costa Rica

Despite the friendly people and the relaxed atmosphere, Costa Rica can be dangerous at times.  The country has no army, and some of the police are corrupt, so you could find yourself a victim of pickpocketing, robbery, or even rape, whilst the police ignore what is happening.

It is wise to travel in a group while you are in Costa Rica – especially if you are female.  Avoid wearing expensive looking jewelery, or flashing fancy MP3 players or mobile phones around.  Keep a firm grip on your wallet, and don't let anyone see how much cash you are carrying.  If you do not look like you have anything worth stealing, you are less likely to be a victim.

This is not said to put you off visiting Costa Rica – it can be a very nice place, but where there is any risk, it is worth taking precautions.

Travel in the country can be dangerous as well.  Bug spray is perhaps one of the most essential travel tips in Costa Rica—the diseases spread by mosquitoes, such as malaria and dengue fever, are deadly.  Additionally, make sure to wear sunscreen, as the sun’s rays are stronger and more direct.

Enjoy The Scenery

If you come to Costa Rica expecting a perfect, idyllic vacation spot then you may find your dreams shattered by the crime, disease, and poverty affecting the area.

If you visit Costa Rica with an open mind and no expectations, then you will have a good time, enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere, and meet some very nice, friendly locals.  Travelers who come to Costa Rica with an open mind usually enjoy the area and have a wonderful time.
