Facts About Hawaii: Interesting, Fascinating & Educational

Hawaii is one of the most popular tourist destinations, and it is not surprising, considering the beautiful scenery, perfect weather, and wonderful atmosphere.  There is a lot about Hawaii that people miss out on, though, and hopefully these Hawaii facts will help you have an even more spectacular holiday next time you go.

A Few Facts About Hawaii

Hawaii is a place known for being the most isolated population center on the face of the earth, and the Hawaiian Islands are the projecting tops of the biggest mountain range in the world, making them a goal to climb for most hikers and mountain climbers. There are different islands flowers and colors which are used to represent each separate island.

The island Nijhau is represented by the Pupu Shell, and the color white.  For Kauai, it is the color purple and the Mokihana.  Oahu is represented by the Llima, and the color yellow.  Maui uses the Lokelani and the color pink, while Molokai is represented by the White Kukui blossom and the color green.  The island of Lanai is represented by Kaunaoa and the color orange, while the Hinahina and the color grey are representative of Kahoolawe.  Finally, the 'Big Island' Hawaii itself is represented by Lehua Ohia and the color red.

Another of the most interesting facts about Hawaii involves Honolulu. It is the largest city in the world and according to the state constitution any island not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This means that all the islands within the Hawaiian Archipelago that stretch to Midway Island are part of Honolulu.

Did you know that the underwater portion of the Hawaiian Volcanic Ridge and Emperor Sea extends around 1600 miles to the north and northwest, making the entire Hawaiian-Emperor volcanic chain more than 3100 miles long?  There are 107 volcanic mountains in the chain, showing the volcanic activity that has been going on in the region for more than 70 million years.

The isolation of the Hawaiian Islands means that they are, essentially, biologically unique.  They were originally colonized with a few species of plants and animals which are hardy enough to survive the journey across the ocean.  Today, more than 4300 species of plants and animals exist only on the islands.  Even more interestingly, the 1000 native plants evolved from less than 300 original species, and the 100 endemic birds are believed to have developed from just 15 original species.

Wow… it's hard to comprehend 70 million years!

How long ago was Hawaii colonized? I didn't think it had been long enough for that many new species to emerge - but my history, and biology if I'm honest, isn't that good.

This makes me want to go though - to see all these species that are unique to just a couple of islands.
