Top Europe Travel Tips

A trip to Europe is a much bigger undertaking than a quick interstate hop to the Grand Canyon, but it can be a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience.  An overseas trip requires thought and planning – you need to change your dollars into Euros or the local currency, and you will need to make sure that your travel documentation is up to date.

You can remove a lot of the work by booking through a travel agent that specializes in European trips, but you can book your own flights and accommodation if you are willing to do a little research and plan carefully.

Staying Safe

There are a number of Europe travel tips that are essential in ensuring your travel safety as you head overseas. First, make sure that all of your documentation is intact, including passports and visas, where applicable. It is also a good idea to register with the nearest U.S. embassy prior to traveling, so that you can be located in the event of an emergency wherever you are. Another important Europe travel tip is to familiarize yourself with the laws and customs of the area that you will be travelling to, since you will be responsible for following the rules of that country while you are there. Make copies of your passport identification page and your itinerary to leave with friends or family while you are gone, in case of a problem.

Money

Some people like to wear a money belt while they are abroad, and keep cash in a few different locations and spread across several pockets so that if some is stolen, they have not lost it all.  Another good idea is to keep some of your money in travelers checks which can easily be replaced if lost.

You can use ATMs while you are abroad, although you may have to pay a transaction fee, and depending on your bank this can be an expensive way of doing things.  There are some banks, however, that allow you to use cash machines anywhere in the world, for no charge – call your bank before you leave to see what their policy is.

If you want to enjoy a taste of local culture at a reasonable price, then one useful tip is to eat local cuisine – usually, local foods are less expensive than international delicacies – so eat falafel in Sweden and fish and chips in England, for example – they may not be considered fancy foods to the locals, but they will be something different compared to what you eat at home.

Europe is a wonderful place to visit, and with a little research and planning you can enjoy a trip to Europe without breaking the bank.
