Planning Your Holiday In Portugal

Portugal is a small country located near Spain.  It is a very attractive country, and one that many people prefer to visit instead of Spain because of the quieter, less 'touristy' atmosphere.

Portuguese people are very friendly and welcoming, and they love to share their culture with foreign visitors. There are a lot of Tourist Offices dotted around the country, where English speaking guides are more than happy to answer your questions and provide you with maps and Portugal travel tips.

Staying Safe In Portugal

Portugal is a relatively safe country.  Like any tourist destination there is some crime, so don't carry around huge amounts of cash or flash expensive gadgets in public.  Beyond these normal safety tips you need not worry too much, as Portugal has a good Police force in the form of the Policia de Segurancia Publica in cities, and the Guarda Nacional Republica in rural areas.

In case an emergency does occur, an important travel tip is to know Portugal’s emergency number, which is 112.  This number will connect you to the fire, police, and ambulence services provided by Portugal.  Emergency Treatment Centers are located in each city and are usually open twenty-four hours a day.

Languages and Culture

The Portuguese language is one that sounds wonderful when spoken – it is similar to both Spanish and Italian.  If you are able to speak the language at all, then it is worth using your talents, as the attempt will be appreciated by the locals.   Most Portuguese people also understand Spanish, however it is best not to speak it as historically, relations between Portugal and Spain have not been very good. In the worst case, most Portuguese people can speak English fairly well.

Life in Portugal

Day to day life in Portugal is slightly different to the USA, and it is worth learning a few of the differences as it will make life during your holiday a little easier.

Most companies in Portugal are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. - there are very few stores open later in the evening.  Tipping in Portugal is not usually done to a strict percentage, although it is considered good form to round the bill up to a round number or Euros.

Foreigners in Portugal are required to carry identification with them at all times, and present it on request.

Why Visit Portugal?

Portugal is a beautiful country with exotic scenery, interesting foods, and a wonderful culture.  It is a safe and welcoming country, and offers all of the beauty of other countries such as Spain, without the over-crowded, tourist trap feeling of the more popular destinations.
