Amsterdam Vacations: Tips For First Time Visitors

Are you planning a vacation to Amsterdam?  Before you jet off to the Netherlands, it is  a good idea to learn a little about the city – after all, the more you know, the more fun you can have while you're there.  This article will explore the city a little, and give you an idea of what to expect during your visit.

Amsterdam is a small, but exciting city.  It has a lot to offer, and a broad range of cultures merge in the city to create a unique atmosphere.  The architecture in the city is astounding, with lots of different eras standing near each other.  There is also a wealth of museums and monuments to enjoy.  Most people in Amsterdam are very friendly, and welcoming to international visitors.

English Speakers Will Feel At Home

The majority of people in Amsterdam speak fluent English, and there are some who also speak German or French.  While many will be flattered if you attempt to converse with them in Dutch, they will often welcome a chance to try their English out on a native speaker, so don't worry too much if you are not very fluent in Dutch.

The layout of the city of Amsterdam is generally determined by a web of canals radiating out from a historical core to loop right round the center.  As many of the Amsterdam vacation resources have noted, these planned, seventeenth century extensions to the medieval town make for a distinctly elegant urban environment.  This is further shown by the presence of tall gabled houses that are reflected in the black green waters of the city.

What Do Visitors Say?

Many visitors have commented that Amsterdam is one of the most beguiling in the world, and much more interesting and diverse than many other European cities.  It is because of this that Amsterdam is one of the most popular destinations even among other Europeans.

Amsterdam is one of the few places in the world where cannabis has been decriminalized.  Even so, you will not find cannabis related produce thrust on you at every corner – it is something that is just quietly 'there', and ignored by many residents of the city.  There are some sites related to it, such as the Cannabis Museum, but as a visitor, the cannabis related scene is something that you may prefer to ignore.

Amsterdam is world renowned for its tolerance towards different cultures, lifestyles, and even styles of dress.  This, again, is something that many locals choose to ignore – perhaps they are jaded to fashion now – but if you are visiting Amsterdam for the fashion scene there are lots of options for you.

Visitors may see Amsterdam as a haven for all things liberal and exotic, but the locals, while tolerant and welcoming, are mostly firmly grounded and indifferent to the scenes that attract so many tourists.
